the passion you
place
in your athiest
beliefs
makes me wonder
what it was
beyond science
that
got Douglas
so enamored
of you.

Maybe
a great sense
of humor?

Lots of people
read stuff
just because
the writing's
good.
And that's
all
they read,
like a waste
of their time.

Maybe it's because
I prefer
buried things,
or words said
once more,
with feeling,
that I wish
everyone
saw beyond the surface,
understood why
some things are tough
when they should be,
when they have
to be,
how they can never
not to be,

in contrast
to those
we make tough
for no good reason
at all.
